The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
