In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
